NRC Code of Conduct

NRC Code of Conduct
NRC’s capacity to ensure the protection of and assistance to refugees, IDPs and other people of concern depends on the ability of our staff to uphold and promote the highest standards of ethical and professional conduct.

NRC has therefore developed the Code of Conduct as an integral part of all contracts of employment and conditions of service.

The Code of Conduct is intended to serve as a guide for how to uphold the ethical foundation of the organisation’s views and actions
The Code of Conduct identifies minimum standards of behaviour for staff
The Code of Conduct aims to help staff to ensure that we protect the communities we work with and that our work does not put the people of concern at greater risk
The Code of Conduct applies to all staff and anyone representing NRC. The staff are personally and collectively responsible for maintaining these standards.

Some of the main topics are:
Respect and dignity for other people and cultures
High standards of personal and professional conduct
Avoid conflict of interest
Protect, manage and utilize financial and material resources in a responsible way
Caution and discretion in regards to information and media
No involvement in criminal and unethical activities
Promotion of safety, health and welfare
Prohibition against sexual exploitation and abuse

As local laws and customs may differ from one country to another, the Code of Conduct is based on international legal standards, the International Code of Conduct in Disaster Relief, the Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Disaster Response. It also reflects the principles and values stated in NRC’s Policy Paper.
